Christ Upon the Rock

Story
Kerala's mural tradition has never belonged to one faith alone. Church walls in Kerala carry the same scalloped clouds, the same lotus eye and the same ochre earth as the temple panels, and this work stands squarely in that shared lineage.
Christ stands on a bank of rounded boulders, each one outlined in a single brown contour and filled with warm stipple so the rock reads as weight rather than pattern. The robe above it is deliberately the opposite: an almost untouched ivory, modelled only by long, fine drapery lines that curve with the body. Nothing in the painting competes with that white.
