Lord Ganesha Beneath the Lotus Vine
The richly ornamented Lord Ganesha seated beneath a flowering canopy
Story
Lord Ganesha fills the panel from crown to foot, seated in a relaxed diagonal posture while the trunk curves across the centre holding a small vessel. The mouse appears at the lower edge, close to the decorated seat.
A flowering lotus vine sweeps across the top of the orange field, its pale blossoms and green leaves creating a light canopy above the heavy gold crown. The body is pale and softly modelled, allowing the layered necklaces, shoulder pieces and patterned garments to carry the strongest colour.
The painting is built on contrasts: the calm face against restless ornament, the broad white body against the glowing ground, and the tiny mouse beside the monumental figure. Together they give the familiar remover of obstacles both grandeur and warmth.
